Indeed, she’s riding one of the most popular waves out there - the high-end chef rediscovering the joys of burgers. Like a number of upscale chefs going downscale, she seems to have had a lot of fun in the process. To create their menu, they brought in Chef Anne Conness, a veteran of The Water Grill, Campanile, Chinois on Main, and Saddle Peak Lodge - among others. Simmzy’s (229 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach 31 ) is the creation of Mike and Chris Simms, whose family has brought us fave raves like Mimi’s Café, the Lazy Dog Café and The Kettle (which sits just across the street from Simmzy’s in a way, it’s The Kettle’s bar and grill).And just to remind us that this is 2018, there’s a salad of baby kale with arugula, feta and watermelon a spinach and arugula salad and a Caesar salad called “Hail Caesar,” made with spiced, fried chickpeas. The Terlingua is made with chili con carne and corn Fritos the Magic Shroom with Laura Chenel goat cheese (fancy!) the El Diablo with pepper jack, habaneros, serranos, salsa roja and chipotle mayo the K-Town Belly with braised pork belly, kimchi and “Korean rice crispies.” There’s a “sushi grade” Ahi Tuna Burger, and a black-bean-corn patty veggie burger. Then, there’s the Goodnight/Good Cause Burger, made with Tillamook cheese, a dollar from which goes to Dream Street, “a free camp for kids with chronic and life threatening diseases.” It’s a chance to eat good, and do good at the same time. You can add cheese and/or bacon as you wish. There’s a Dressed Burger with bacon, bleu cheese, gruyere, a fried egg, caramelized onions and tomato jam. It’s become a world unto itself, a world where our national fantasies live and play. Like the flag and Mom’s apple pie, the hamburger is a bit of pure, uncut Americana.
